I have created this blog to help me with my media exam in June and would be greatful for your comments and opinions. My topic is on 'Children and The Media' and my main focus is to answer the question, considering all aspects.
My question is....
Does hip hop music glamorise gun crime for teenagers?
There is a lot of publicity of hip hop idols posing with guns and other offensive weapons on album covers. Many hip hop artists are pictured on album covers and billboards posing as if to promote guns as a desired accessory as shown in the pictures below.
- What are your impressions of these hip hop artists posing with these weapons in this fashion?
- Do you think these artists are promoting gun crime in this way?

i think people forget hip hop is a massive thing, its not just a music genre, its become a culture for many teens around the world.
so obviously the things artists do will affect its followers...people aspire to live the same lifestyle,
personally i think hip hop music is no more to blame for increasing gun crime in young people than films which show violence.
a prime example is the film 'mr and mrs smith' on billboards around the country brad pitt was seen holding a gun?
50 cents poster in which he held a gun caused massive uproar and was banned? whats the difference.
films like scarface and godfather, which are a lot more visual then any music cd, surely would have a bigger impact on younger ppl.
Yes i think that these hip hop artists are promoting gun crime. They are role models to millions of fans. Their lyrics reinforce negative aspects of life repeatedly.
The more popular the tune, the more catchy the song, the higher the chance the song will stay in the teenagers long term memory.
Eg when learnong to drive, after a while once you've become accustomed to driving you are unaware of such acts (changing the gear stick) unconciously.
In the same way llyrics are used and are memorised through long term memory (LTM)and are acted upon unconsciously.
